What is a WiFi Hotspot?

Hotspots are high speed access locations which allow individuals to connect to the Internet with a wireless technology called Wi-Fi.Button has considerable experience in managing a fast growing network of Wi-Fi hotspots with locations currently in Cape Town, Stellenbosch, Pretoria, Johannesburg and Umkomaas. Our vision is to provide South Africa with a hotspot solution that is unsurpassed in value to both the establishment and its patrons.

Why is Wi-Fi so successful?

With most new laptops and PDAs having built-in Wi-Fi adapters and with Wi-Fi being an international standard it is quickly becoming the mobile technology of choice for Internet connectivity. Individuals can connect to the Internet using so-called “access points” at home, in the office and elsewhere. The growth of Wi-Fi is spurred on by being a technology that offers high-speed, low-cost, reliable and hassle free wireless Internet access. Such Internet access is highly sought after by business people, foreign tourists and everyone else with a compatible mobile device.

Wi-Fi is also successful because mobile Internet users are nomadic, that is they move from location to location. Once at a particular location, say a coffee shop or hotel, they are likely to use the best connection available in terms of cost, convenience and quality. Although Wi-Fi has a limited range compared to other technologies (e.g. 3G), Internet access using Wi-Fi is generally vastly superior to when it comes to the three mentioned factors - cost, convenience and quality.

How does RedButton's hotspot system work?

RedButton uses the state-of-the-art RedButton hotspot solution developed in-house. We are able to offer unsurpassed convenience, flexibility and value to our customers and partners.

When a patron brings a laptop into a Button hotspot, their web browser is redirected to a web page, called the hotspot portal page [see examples]. They create a user account if they haven't got one already and purchase data credits using their credit card. Patrons buy a desired amount of Megabytes of data (or time at hotspots supporting time billing) and are able to use these data credits at their own leisure. The benefit of megabyte, as opposed to standard time based billing, is that the user can read emails or web pages in their own time without feeling rushed. This ultimately results in a superior user experience. The user experience is further enhanced by knowing that they can use the data credits they bought at any hotspot that uses the same billing system.

Are there any health risks associated with WiFi Hotspots?

No! WiFi access points do not exceed the legal transmission power levels of 100mW of radio waves in the 2.4GHz frequency. To put this in perspective, a cell phone radiates 200-600mW of a similar frequency(0.9 or 1.8GHz) right next to your skull while our access point antennas are at least a few metres away from you. The radiation from a cell phone is thus at least 20 times stronger when it reaches your body. Even at these levels it has been conclusively shown in countless international studies that there is no evident link between disease and radio frequency radiation.

But don't take our word for it. Numerous research has been done that concludes that WiFi is indeed safe. Read more about these findings here.
